Field Trip Options

Choose from one of these visits:

Teacher's Choice

$7.00 per person
You and your students can discover, investigate and explore the entire Children's Museum at your own pace for up to three hours. Our friendly Museum Educators are stationed in exhibit areas to answer questions and provide assistance.

Guided Field Trips

$8.00 per person
Enjoy a fun-filled trip throughout the Museum for up to three hours. A Museum Educator leads each group through our exhibits.

Focus Field Trips

Customize a field trip up to three hours with one hour spent with guided hands-on activities led by a Museum Educator and two hours exploring the Children’s Museum. There is a 60 student maximum for Focus Field Trips unless otherwise noted.

    Design a Field Trip

    Work with our Education Staff to design a standards-based field trip to complement you classroom curriculum. Past teacher-inspired focus field trips include:

    • Culminating activities for ASSET science kits
    • Using Visual Thinking Strategies for art exploration
    • Studies of printmaking history and process
    • Readers' Theater presentations
    Prices vary.

    Puppet-palooza
    $9.00 per person
    Preschool - Grade 6
    (PA Standards: 1.3, 1.6, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3)
    Learn about are of puppetry with our marionette, rod, shadow and hand puppet collection. An Educator will guide you through the basics of being a puppeteer and help you create your own puppet!

    Clay Creations
    $10.00 per person
    Preschool - Grade 6
    (PA Standards: 1.6, 4.2, 9.1)
    Create a piece of clay artwork from start to finish. With advance notice, our staff will adapt the visit to fit your curriculum. Finished pieces are ready within weeks of your visit. Note: Maximum class is 24 students.

    Everything Green
    $9.00 per person
    Kindergarten- Grade 8

    Did you know the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh is one of the nation's first green-certified children’s museums? Discover what makes makes a building “green” and explore fun ways in which you can help contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.

    Working with Wood
    $10.00 per person
    Preschool - Grade 8
    (PA Standards: 1.6, 3.7, 9.1, 10.3, 10.5, 13.2)
    Sharpen your fine motor skills as you learn how to use real tools such as hammers, hand drills, and hand saws and the safety rules for each. Then flex your creativity through invention and mathematics as you create your own wooden project. Note: Maximum class size is 24 students.

    Build-a-Boat Challenge
    $10.00 per person
    Grades 1 - 8
    (PA Standards: 1.6, 2.3, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6, 3.7, 10.3, 10.5, 11.2, 11.3, 13.3)
    Using a medley of materials organic and plastic, students will build their very own floating masterpiece in our Garage Workshop and then sail it down our Waterplay river! But beware pirates and other perils will reinforce some quick problem solving skills! Note: Maximum class size is 24 students.

    Broadcasting with The Saturday Light Brigade
    $12.00 per person
    Grades 1-8
    (PA Standards: 1.6, 3.6, 3.7, 3.8, 9.1, 9.2, 13.1, 13.2)
    Work in the professional broadcasting studio used by the family radio program The Saturday Light Brigade, located within the Museum! A broadcasting professional leads a workshop on how a radio program is created. Activities include hands-on time in the studio and a digital recording exercise with a CD memento for the group. Note: Maximum class size is 24 students.

    Architecture: Past to Present
    $12.00 per person
    Grades 6 - 8
    (PA Standards: 1.6, 4.2, 8.2, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, 13.1)
    Explore the unique architecture of the Museum with an activity-filled tour of its three distinct buildings, built during three different eras. Presented in partnership with Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Society, this field trip uses hands-on activities to understand building design including materials and philosophies that shape our current structure.

    Color My World
    $9.00 per person
    Preschool - Grade 2
    (PA Standards: 1.6, 9.1, 9.2, 9.4)
    Introduce children to an appreciation of color theory by mixing and creating colors using the three primary colors - red, blue and yellow. Then explore the relationship between color and emotions.

    Learn with Stuffee®
    $9.00 per person
    Preschool - Grade 3
    (PA Standards: 1.6, 3.3, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4)
    Learn about how your body works, the importance of exercising and eating healthy foods, and general hygiene with our seven-foot tall mascot Stuffee®.

  • Focus Field Trips for the Older Child


    Factors of Flight
    $9.00 per person
    Grades 3 – 8
    (PA Standards: 1.6, 2.3, 2.5, 2.7, 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6, 13.1)
    How does something as heavy as an airplane fly through the air? Explore the basic principles of flight with hands-on activities and experiments in lift, force, air-resistance, drag, drop time and terminal velocity. Then build and launch your own rocket, airplane and parachute.

    Electric Cardboard Cars
    $10.00 per person
    Grades 3 – 8
    (PA Standards: 1.6, 2.3, 2.7, 3.2, 3.4, 3.6, 3.7, 13.1)
    Turn gears and die-cut cardboard pieces into a working car. Learn how to make an electric switch and attach a motor to make it run. Note: Maximum class size is 24 students.

Field Trip Basics

  • Field trips are available Monday - Friday.
  • All groups must have a minimum of 15 children for group rates.
  • Please arrange for one adult chaperone for every five children. One chaperone for every five children is FREE. Admission for each additional adult chaperone is $7.
  • Membership cards are not valid for group admissions

The Children's Museum is fully accessible by ramp and elevator, with the exception of the Gravity Room in the Attic. Bathrooms offer accessible facilities. ..
