Workshops for Scouts and Groups

Earn and receive a Try-It or badge by fulfilling the requirements at the Children’s Museum. We offer specific workshops for Girl Scouts but can create a class especially for your group. Workshops are two hours long.

$12.00 per child, minimum 10 children

Choose from one of these Try-It Workshops for Brownie Scouts:

Sound of Music

1. Introduce musical vocabulary and families of music
2. Make a musical shaker out of film canisters.
3. Make a rainstick using paper towel rowels.
4. Make a tissue box guitar.
5. Make a reed from straws.

My Body

1. Brain Power; using different muscles to perform multiple tasks.
2. Dreams: draw an image from a dream and discuss it.
3. Pulse: explain pulse rates and take before and after different excercises.
4. Body Parts: meet Stuffee, our seven foot tall health teaching mascot.

Healthy Habits

1. make a small batch of homemade toothpaste.
2. Create the food pyramid.
3. Feeling game? Learn how feelings relate to your health.
4. Meet Stuffee, our seven foot tall health teaching mascot.

Colors and Shapes

1. Learn about color mixing and creating palettes of colors to create a painting.
2. Make a silkscreen using different shapes.
3. Make a paperweaving of multiple colors.
4. Make a handmade piece of paper using several colors and shapes.

Building Art

1. Discuss the architecture of the building.
2. Use real nuts and bolts to create a structure in our Build It exhbit.
3. Create a dome structure out of triangles.
4. Create a collage of your ideal neighborhood.
5. Design a space for someone with special needs.

Science Wonders

1.Create a butterfly out of construction paper and paper towel rolls.
2.Create a parachute out of cloth or plastic bags.
3.Make a handmade piece of paper.
4.Learn about different sizes, shapes and colors of bubbles.


Choose from one of these Junior Scout Workshops:

Architecture

1.Building Tour; take a tour of the building and learn about it’s architecture.
2.Making their Mark; learn about an architect of the Children’s Museum.
3.Down to Scale; make a plan of a room using graph paper.
4.House of Sticks; create a structure out of triangles.
5.Nature’s Design; create a collage of your ideal neighborhood garden.
6.From Airports to Zoos; design a space for someone with special needs.

Ceramics and Clay

1.Learn about different types of clay and the proper use of tools.
2.Make it with Clay; learn how to make a figurine out of clay.
3.Coil up; make a coil pot.
4.Time for Tiles; make a decorative tile using different tools.
5.Grin and Glaze It; learn about glazing clay then apply slip glazes to finish the pieces.
6.Handle with Care; discuss techniques for storing and handling clay.

Prints and Graphics

1.Create a collograph print by gluing objects onto cardboard and then using the printing press. 2.Rubbed the Right Way; create rubbings by using at least 4 different textured items.
3.Stencil Fun; create a stencil in order to make prints.
4.Create a Silkscreen.
5.Decorating with Prints; create a wall hanging using one of the previously made prints.
6.Eye for Design; make a few pieces of paper to create stationary.

Radio Studio Visit and Interviewing 101

1.Experiment with microphones and audio mixers.
2.Learn about interviewing.
3.Conduct interviews.
4.Learn about digital editing.


Camp-Ins for Scouts and Groups

Spend the night at the Children’s Museum! Explore our Museum. Enjoy an evening snack and breakfast. Special activities in history, puppets, creative dramatics and more can be arranged for your group and tailored to fulfill certain Try-It or badge requirements. Great for Girl and Boy Scouts, Campfire Boys and Girls, church and camp groups. Each Camp-In accommodates groups of up to 150 people.
